General genealogy resources

Ancestry.com

Ancestry Library Edition. Available for in-library use only. The Library Edition contains everything that an individual paid-subscription to Ancestry.com does, except that you may not submit your own data to the World Family Tree or post on Ancestry’s message boards.  (You may still read them, however).  Search results can be printed or saved to a thumb-drive.  Click here for tips on using Ancestry at the library.

Cyndi’s List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet.  A well-organized site with hundreds of thousands of links to online genealogy resources.

FamilySearch.org. Online indexes for birth, marriage, death, census, church and other records.  Plus, numerous articles and guides to help with genealogy research.

FreeBMD. Search the Civil Registration Index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales for free.  The online index currently contains over 170,000,000 records, but is not yet complete.  Instructions for ordering certificates are provided.

National Archives (UK).  Lots of help for family historians researching their British ancestors.  Some documents available to view online, including wills, non-conformist records, passenger lists and more.

National Archive’s Web site for Genealogists and Family Historians. Some records available online. Also, finding aids, guides for using the Archive’s collection, and general help for genealogists.

RootsWeb is a free, online genealogy community that is funded by Ancestry.com.  Message boards and mailing lists make it easy to find and get in touch with other people who are researching the same names or places.

The USGenWeb Project. Volunteer project aiming to provide compilations of genealogical information from each state and each county in the country.

Maine, Brunswick and Harpswell resources

Curtis Family Genealogy. Where to find resources on the family of William John Curtis, who donated the library to the town of Brunswick.

Genealogical Resources in the Bowdoin College Library’s Department of Special Collections & Archives. Materials in the archives include biographical information about Bowdoin alumni, church, military and land records, papers of several Maine families, and more.  Some finding aids are available online.

Genealogical Research at the Maine State Archives. Online indexes to Maine marriages from 1892-1966 and 1976-1996, and an online index of Maine deaths from 1960-1996.  Also, information on where to find Maine vital records, census schedules, military records, and court/judicial records.

Harpswell Historical Society. The Harpswell Historical Society has a genealogy page listing the names of Harpswell families for which they have information. They also have copies of the births, deaths and marriages from the town reports from 1888-2000, burial lists for several of Harpswell’s cemeteries, 18th century baptismal records, and some Casco Bay Directories.

Maine Franco-American Genealogy Society Located at Great Fall School in Auburn, the MFGS maintains a library with over 2,500 volumes, and lots of workspace to read them in. Volunteers will do research for those who can’t make it to the library, for a fee.  Many other resources may be found on the library’s Franco-American page.

Pejepscot Genealogy Society. The mission of the Society is to “collect, exchange and preserve written and oral genealogical records and related historical information and to encourage and assist the study of study of genealogy and family history.” Membership is open to anyone who is interested in genealogy and family history.

Pejepscot Historical Society. The Society has over 15,000 historical photos from the Brunswick region, including many individual and family portraits.  Many of these can be viewed online as part of The Maine Memory Network.  Also, the Society has an extensive archival collection containing thousands of documents and manuscripts.

Prism: The University of Maine Yearbook Online (Fogler Library, University of Maine at Orono).  Looking for a University of Maine graduate?  All volumes of the yearbook, from 1895 to 1997, have been digitally scanned and can be browsed page by page.
