The Coalition for Dialogue on Death and Dying is pleased to offer their third annual fall Symposium. Based on feedback from participants of prior symposia, the focus of this years program is spirituality.
Dr. Carl Hammerschlag, Keynote Speaker:
The Coalition is honored to present internationally recognized community psychiatrist, lecturer, author, healer, grandfather, sculptor, and flyfisherman, Carl Hammerschlag, M.D., as the speaker/facilitator for the program. Dr. Hammerschlag holds an M.D. degree from the State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center; he completed his post-doctoral training in psychiatry at Yale Medical School. When he completed his internship in 1965, he took an interesting departure from conventional medicine. As a field medical officer for the U. S. Public Health Service, his first assignment was working with Native Americans at the Indian Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This experience profoundly changed and enriched his life and was the beginning of an odyssey which has continued for more than 25 years.
Dr. Hammerschlag served for 16 years as Chief of Psychiatry at The Phoenix Indian Medical Center. He is a fellow in several professional associations; a faculty member at The University of Arizona School of Medicine; Advisory Board Member to SHAPE MAGAZINE; and is one of the leading proponents of psychoneuroimmunology (mind/body/spirit medicine). He is a 1998 recipient of the National Caring Award which honors "the 10 most caring adults in America". He has shared his journey in his books: "The Dancing Healers", now in its 15th printing; "The Theft of the Spirit"; and his third book, "Healing Ceremonies", has been released to rave reviews. Dr. Hammerschlags first childrens book, "The Go-Away Doll", has recently been distributed.
Dr. Hammerschlag is a rare combination of dreamer and doctor - heartened by the power of possibilities. He challenges us to look at the familiar in new ways, and will inspire you as few speakers are able to do. Topics of his presentations will include:
_ "Sustaining Our Healing Spirit: The Journey of Heroes"
_ "Achieving Balance in Our Lives: The Practical Applications of Psychoneuroimmunology"
_ "Healing vs. Curing: The Role of Caregivers in the Art of Dying"
_ Interactive applications of topics will be emphasized
