Coalition for Dialogue on Death and Dying

APPENDIX 2: DEMOGRAPHY

The study area for this report is Mid Coast Maine, comprising fourteen communities: Arrowsic, Bath, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Brunswick, Freeport, Georgetown, Harpswells, Phippsburg, Richmond, Topsham, West Bath, and Woolwich. Total population of the region is 66, 207 (1990 Census figures).

Figures 2 and 3, respectively, reflect 1994-1996 death by place (numbers and percentage). Total death have shown a gradual increase (542 to 562) over the three year period. Most communities reflect an increase in deaths except for Brunswick, Arrowsic, Bowdoin, and Phippsburg. Place of death figures reflect the major location of death: Maine Hospital, At Home, and Intermediate Care Facilities. These comprise 539 (or 96%) of the deaths in the region. Closer examination reflect trends in the sites between 1994 and 1996:

    • Deaths in hospitals decreased from 252 to 236 (46% to 42%)
    • Death at home increased from 118 to 134 (22% to 24%) – higher in 1995
    • Deaths at Intermediate Care facilities increased from 128 to 169 (24% to 30%)

These shadow national studies that reveal a decrease in deaths in hospitals, an increase in death at home with the largest increase being found in intermediate care facilities.

The chief causes of death in the region are: infectious and parasitic diseases, malignant neoplasms, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, pneumonia and influenza, chronic obstruction and pulmonary disease, accidents and adverse effects and all other causes. The three major causes of death are: malignancy, heart, chronic obstruction pulmonary disease. Figure 1 depicts those three causes of death in number in the three major locations of death in 1996. These figures also parallel national findings. People with heart disease die in hospitals because of the suddenness or short term factor. Cancer, for the most part, is a factor of longer, more prolonged process and, as a result, people die in intermediate and extended care facilities (nursing homes).
