Monhegan provided a list of rarities. The best were
MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD,
PROTHONOTARY, CONNETICUT, YELLOW-THROATED and
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER. But,
other notables included: CLAY COLORED and LARK SPARROWS,
BLUE GROSBEAK,
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, SEDGE WREN, YELLOW-BREASTED
CHAT, RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER, and DICKCISSEL. Other birds on the island
were WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED and EVENING GROSBEAKS, SCARLET
TANAGER,
YELLOW-BELLIED and LEAST FLYCATCHERS, and numerous other
species.
York County
A late season WHIP-POOR-WILL was singing in the woods
down by the Little
Ossipee River on September 29th.
A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and 4 MERLIN were seen at
Laudholm Farm in Wells.
At the Hill's Beach section of Biddeford Pool there were
RED KNOTS,
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, PEREGRINE FALCON, and PARULA,
BLACKPOLL and PINE
WARBLERS.
In Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco there were 6 RED-EYED and
1 BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, 6 AMERICAN WIGEON, and a PINE WARBLER.
Greater Portland and western Maine
There was a DICKCISSEL with House Sparrows at the Pine
Point town landing,
Scarborough, on Saturday morning. Also at Pine Point were
3 OYSTERCATCHERS,
75 SANDERLINGS, 5 DUNLIN, and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER.
Elsewhere at Scarborough
marsh last Saturday were 38 PECTORAL and 4 STILT
SANDPIPERS and 4 WHIMBREL.
Several SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS provided good views at
Scarborough on the
27th. Five SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS and at least
six NELSON'S
SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were seen along with one or two
other birds in latter
group, which appeared to be hybrids. SAVANNAH SPARROWS
were on the move
through the woods bordering the marsh on Black Point end,
also along Eastern
Road just beyond footbridge. A MERLIN and 2 NORTERN
HARRIERS were hunting on
the marsh. Six HUDSONIAN GODWITS were at Winnock's Neck.
Three RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS were near the None Such River along the
Mitchell Hill Road in
Scarborough.
A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at Maine Audubon's Fore River
Sanctuary in
Portland. In Portland at the Dragon Cement Plant there
were BROWN THRASHER,
2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, WILSON'S SNIPE, 10 BLACKPOLL and
other WARBLERS, and 2
RED-EYED VIREOS.
On Mackworth Island in Falmouth there was an EASTERN
PHOEBE and a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW.
Heavy bird traffic through and over Sandy Point on
Cousins Island in
Yarmouth included: DICKCISSEL, GRAY-CHEEKED, and
SWAINSON'S THRUSH, 13
species of warblers, dominated by PALM &
YELLOW-RUMPED, including 1
BLACKBURNIAN, several NASHVILLES & PARULAS, many
RED-EYED and BLUE-HEADED
VIREOS, increasing numbers of SPARROWS plus PILEATED
WOODPECKER and
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
In Fryeburg Harbor on the Sod Farms on the 26th were 4
GREATER YELLOWLEGS
and 14 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS. While on the 28th there were
1 KILLDEER, 1
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, 4 DUNLINS,
and 17 PECTORAL SANDPIPER. On the 30th in Fryeburg Harbor
there were 14
KILLDEER, 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 14 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, 2 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, and 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS. While in North
Fryeburg on the 30th
there were 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS and 1 COOPER'S HAWK.
Central Maine
Seven AMERICAN PIPITS and a GOLDEN PLOVER were in Turner.
In Etna there were 55 TURKEYS, and a RED-TAILED HAWK.
Midcoast
At Seawall Beach in Phippsburg there were 3 PEREGRINE
FALCONS, 1 GOLDEN
PLOVER, 30 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 80 SANDERLINGS, and a
DUNLIN.
In Georgetown there were AMERICAN WOODCOCK, RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRDS, 35
SNOWY and 1 GREAT EGRETS, and a KINGFISHER.
Another report from Monhegan tallied 84 species.
Highlights include 6
POMARINE JAEGER (2 adult light morphs with full tail
streamers (1
Burnthead 9/25, 4 Lobster Cove 9/26, 1 ferry to Port
Clyde 9/27), BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER, AMERICAN PIPIT, four species of VIREOS
including PHILADELPHIA,
18 species of WARBLERS including BLUE-WINGED, 2 LARK
SPARROWS, and 3
BOBOLINKS.
Northern Maine
In Easton on Lake Josephine there were 5 SURF SCOTERS, 9
RUDDY DUCKS, 1
STILT SANDPIPER, 1 MERLIN, and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
A DUNLIN and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHTHERON were at Mars
Hill.
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was in Orient.
