Arriving this week were COMMON SNIPE and EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. Not many birds

arrived due to the several inches of snow last Friday and over the weekend.

 Despite the weather the number of EASTERN PHOEBES, KILLDEER and the like,

increased, while there was a reverse migration of the few TREE SWALLOWS that

arrived during the previous week. The WATERFOWL migration is picking up

some, but overall, it appears that numbers are small.

 

York County

 

Six FOX SPARROWS and a BARRED OWL were seen in York.

 

Two FOX SPARROWS, 3 COMMON SNIPE, 1 AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and a CHIPPING

SPARROW were seen in Kennebunk.

 

Fourteen RING-NECKED and 1 WOOD DUCK were on the Littlefield River where Rt.

111 crosses it in Alfred.

 

Nine COMMON SNIPE, 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS and TURKEYS were seen in Dayton.

 

WOOD DUCKS were at Biddeford Pool.

 

On the marsh below Laurel Hill Cemetery there were GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON,

WOOD DUCK, and TREE SWALLOWS.

 

At the Saco Yacht Club there were CAROLINA WREN, COMMON MERGANSERS,

DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, and EASTERN PHOEBE.  Along the Boom Road in Saco

there were RING-NECKED DUCKS, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, WOOD DUCKS, 2 COMMON SNIPE,

4 HORNED LARKS, AMERICAN KESTREL, and TURKEYS.

 

Greater Portland and western Maine

 

Five SNOW GEESE were at Pine Point in Scarborough.   A COMMON SNIPE was at

the Scarborough Industrial Park.   SNOWY EGRET, GLOSSY IBIS, and

GREEN-WINGED TEAL continue to be seen behind the Maine Audubon Center and

across the street.  At  the Pelreco Plant there were  2 male NORTHERN

SHOVELER, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,  and 1 VESPER SPARROW.  Along Eastern Road in

Scarborough there were 12 COMMON SNIPE, EASTERN PHOEBE, and NORTHERN

FLICKER.  On Prout’s Pond off Pleasant Hill Road there were 6 RING-NECKED

DUCKS and 1 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT.

 

A CAROLINA WREN was at Broad Cove in Cape Elizabeth.

 

On the Eastern Promenade in Portland there was1 alternate plumage adult

Bonaparte's Gull.  At Back Cove in Portland there was a FISH CROW and

GREEN-WINGED TEAL.  The list from Evergreen Cemetery included SWAMP SPARROW,

EASTERN PHOEBE, BELTED KINGFISHER, and NORTHERN FLICKER.

 

A COOPER’S HAWK was at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth.

 

The AM ERICAN WIDGEON pair was still in the pond at Mill Creek Park, South

Portland, Sunday afternoon.

 

The list from Bridgton and South Bridgeton included 9 EVENING GROSBEAKS,

EASTERN PHOEBE, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, TURKEY VULTURE, 3 KILLDEER, and AMERICAN

WOODCOCK

 

A BALD EAGLE was soaring over the Androscoggin River and Rt. 2  just west of

Rumford.

 

Central Maine

 

Three EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen in Turner.

 

Two EASTERN PHOEBES were in Richmond.

 

A DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT and 30 COMMON MERGANSERS were on the Kennebec

River above Randolph-Gardiner bridge.

 

TREE SWALLOWS were also in Gardiner at the bridge.

 

A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was on the West Road near Belgrade Lakes village.

 

A CAROLINA WREN was found in Oakland.

 

In Waterville there were TREE SWALLOW and TURKEY VULTURE.

 

An OSPREY was seen in Clinton.

 

Two FOX SPARROWS have been visiting an Orono feeder.

 

AMERICAN WIGEON  were seen in Orrington.

 

Midcoast

 

An OSPREY was sitting on a pole next to the nest, in West Bath between the

lanes of U.S. One.

 

Just outside Bath to the west in Pleasant Cove in Woolwich, were lots of

RING-NECKED DUCKS and GREEN-WINGED TEAL.

 

A BALD EAGLE was sitting on a nest on the Brunswick side of New Meadows,

just south of US1.

 

On Merry Meeting Bay there were 700 BLACK DUCKS, 66 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 4

GADWALL, 100 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 6 AMERICAN WIGEON, 2

BARROW’S GOLDENEYES, and a BALD EAGLE.

 

A COOPER’S HAWK was in Phippsburg.

 

Arriving in Georgetown were BROWN THRASHER, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, EASTERN

PHOEBE, OSPREY, EVENING GROSBEAK, and TURKEYS.

 

Six PIPING PLOVERS feeding with a flock of SANDERLINGS were seen at Seawall

Beach, 4/3/03,  at the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area in a

snowstorm.  Ten TREE SWALLOWS were also seen there.

 

A Northern Flicker was in Gouldsboro area.

 

Eastern Maine

 

A HORNED LARK was seen in Sedgwick.

 

In Dennysville there were SONG and WHITE THROATED SPARROWS, DARK-EYED

JUNCOS, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and BALD EAGLE.

 

There was 1 SNOW BUNTING, 2 RED SHOULDERED HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and

AMERICAN WOODCOCK along the Upper Codyville Road in Topsfield

 

Northern Maine

 

An EASTERN PHOEBE was in Houlton along with DARK-EYED JUNCOS.
