A BLACK SKIMMER was seen on 9-23-02 in Ogunquit at public parking lot on
Beach St. across from the Norseman Motel.
The list from Monhegan Island was extensive. Notables included BLUE
GROSBEAK, LARK and CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, WESTERN KINGBIRD, YELLOW-BILLED
and BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, CAROLINA, WINTER and MARSH
WRENS, EASTERN PHOEBE, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, LEAST FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA
and other VIREOS, and 15 species of WARBLERS.
Notable were wide spread reports of migrating CANADA GEESE and
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS.
York County
At the Cliff House there were 129 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 10 to 15 GANNETS, 115
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 75 immature BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 4 LAUGHING GULLS,
12 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, CANADA GEESE were in several groups of 87,12,21,79
for a total of 199 birds, and a CAROLINA WREN was singing.
Behind Hattie's at Biddeford Pool there was 1 MARBLED and 1 HUDSONIAN
GODWIT, 10 RED KNOTS, 150 BLACK-BELLIED and at least 1 AMERICAN-GOLDEN
PLOVER, RUDDY TURNSTONES, 1 WHIMBREL, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, as well
as the smaller PEEP SANDPIPERS. Elsewhere at Biddeford Pool there were 1
YELLOW-THROATED and numerous RED-EYED VIREOS, BLACK-THROATED BLUE and
BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. Three GREATER YELLOWLEGS
AND 20 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were at Hills Beach in Biddeford Pool.
Greater Portland and western Maine
A BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen in with BONAPARTE'S GULLS along with a FORSTER'
S TERN at Pine Point.
NORTHERN GANNETS were in Casco Bay.
Good birds in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland included 7 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1
HOODED MERGANSER, 1 AMERICAN WIGEON, and an EASTERN PHOEBE.
At Back Cove in Portland the RAPTOR list included: 5 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 1
PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 MERLIN, 24 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 6 OSPREY, 1 TURKEY
VULTURE, and 1 COOPER'S and 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.
Near the Dragon Cement Plant along Route 9 in Portland there were: 1
MOURNING WARBLER, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 6 MARSH WRENS, 14 WILD
TURKEYS, 1 KESTREL, 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, 1 COOPER'S
HAWK, and a fly over of 12 SNOW GEESE.
A CAROLINA WREN was in Falmouth.
There was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER from Spring Brook
Farm in Cumberland, and 100+ LAUGHING GULLS from the Cumberland Coast.
Two OSPREY and COMMON RAVENS were sighted in Pownal.
In Bridgton there was a SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 1 BELTED KINGFISHER, and 50
CANADA GEESE.
Found in Wilton this week were DARK-EYED JUNCOS, MOURNING WARBLER, and
WHITE-CROWNED and CHIPPING SPARROWS.
Midcoast
Located in Phippsburg were RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, MERLIN, and TURKEY
VULTURE. Over Morse Mountain were 2 OSPREY, 4 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 5
KESTREL, and 1 NORTHERN HARRIER.
On Clary Hill in Union there were VESPER SPARROWS and KESTRELS.
On Westkeag marsh near Thomaston there were 4 GREAT EGRETS, 6 SNOWY EGRETS,
10 GREEN-WINGED and 12 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 16 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, 1 DUNLIN, and 4 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.
NORTHERN GANNETS, 16 SNOWY EGRETS, and several OSPREYS were seen from Indian
Point in Georgetown, as well as RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, and EASTERN
PHOEBES were seen elsewhere in Georgetown.
Eastern Maine
On Roque Island there were 1 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, 3 VESPER SPARROWS, 1
COOPER'S HAWK, 85 BLACK GUILLEMOTS, and 40 SURF SCOTERS.
Central Maine
Notable birds in Turner included 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 125+ AMERICAN PIPITS, 7
species of warblers including 1 BLACK and WHITE, 8 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS,
3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
In Richmond this week there were 20 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, RUBY and
GOLDNEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, and NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
An AMERICAN PIPIT was at Unity College in Unity.
Eight EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were seen in Dixmont.
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were in the parking lot at Maine Audubon's Fields Pond
Nature Center in Holden.
Northern Maine
In Fort Kent there were approximately 1,300 BLACKBIRDS, 1 RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER.
