There were several notables this week. BLACK SKIMMERS and a CASPIAN TERN
were seen which were most commonly are vagrants following hurricanes. The
CASPIAN TERN was on the sandbar to Basket Island at Hills Beach in Biddeford
Pool at the change of tide on August 1, while two BLACK SKIMMERS were seen
at the river near the Fisherman's Co-op at Pine Point in Scarborough during
the afternoon of August 5. A KING RAIL was seen at Dunstan Landing, 10 feet
down the old road in Scarborough about 3:00 PM on the 31st.
A REEVE continues to be seen in the pannes off Eastern Rd in Scarborough.
Also seen this AM among the +500 shorebirds (down from +1,500 last night)
were 1 STILT, 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 5 WHITE-RUMPED and 4 PECTORALS
SANDPIPERS, and 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS.
At the other end of the spectrum there were very early COMMON GOLDENEYE and
BUFFLEHEAD. At Wolf Neck Park there was an out of season female COMMON
GOLDENEYE. An out of season female BUFFLEHEAD was seen by the Harraseeket
Yacht Club in Freeport
York County
Pair of CAROLINA WRENS and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK were found in York.
At Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunk there were SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
SANDERLINGS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, PIPING PLOVERS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. WHIP-POOR-WILLS were near the Clock Farm.
HUDSONIAN GODWIT, 3 WHIMBREL, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, and usual peeps were on the sandbar to Basket Island at the
change of tide.
At Biddeford Pool this week there were MERLIN, BLACK-BELLIED and
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, HUDSONIAN GODWITS, WHIMBREL, GREATER and LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, WILLETS, SANDERLINGS, and SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS
At the Saco Heath there were COMMON RAVEN, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, PRAIRIE and
PINE WARBLER, EASTERN TOWHEE, and WHITE-THROATED and SWAMP SPARROW
Scarborough Marsh Area
Behind the Pelreco building at Pine Point there were 19 GREAT EGRETS, 1
TRICOLOR and 4 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, plus many various SHOREBIRDS. At Pine
Point there were lots of SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS, RUDDY
TURNSTONES, WHIMBRELS, 1 young BLACK GUILLEMOT, COMMON and ROSEATE TERNS,
and BONAPARTE GULLS.
Greater Portland and western Maine
Two flocks of SNOWY EGRETS were seen off of Route 95 in Yarmouth- across
from the Delorme Map store.
A FISH CROW was in the North Deering section of Portland.
LAUGHING GULLS were at the treatment plant off Marginal Way.
Two adult and 3 immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS were observed in
Evergreen Cemetery.
Two BALD EAGLES were in Wilton.
At Brownfield Bog there were WOOD DUCKS, COMMON SNIPE, and several species
of WARBLERS.
Central Maine
Three HOUSE WRENS were in Topsham.
Five GREAT EGRETS were feeding in exposed mud in the Androscoggin backwater
at the boat access on the north side of Center Bridge Road in Turner Center.
A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was in Turner.
PURPLE MARTINS and a HERMIT THRUSH were seen in Augusta.
Northern Maine
In Hodgdon Village near Houlton there were BALD EAGLE, MERLIN, and EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS.
COMMON LOONS and an OVENBIRD were found in Fort Kent.
Midcoast
At Pemaquid there were WILSON'S PETRELS and BONAPARTE GULLS.
Eastern Maine
There has been an increase in the numbers of COMMON LOONS seen around
Frenchman Bay and within 10 miles off shore during the past week. Good
numbers of GREATER SHEARWATERS are being seen daily from the whale watch
boats out of Bar Harbor. PUFFINS have been seen up in Frenchman Bay this
past week. One was off Sand Beach at Acadia National Park on 7/29 and 4 were
off Egg Rock the same day. On July 27, two ARCTIC TERNS and 6+ GANNETS were
off Egg Rock.  Several RUDDY TURNSTONES were at Egg Rock on 7/29. The single
BRANT remains at Egg Rock right through 7/29. The first BONAPARTE'S GULLS
were seen in Frenchman Bay on 7/30. An immature POMARINE JAEGER was
harassing gulls off Egg Rock on 7/30. Twenty + RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were
seen a mile South East of Egg Rock on 7/30.
A great puffin night at Eastern Egg Rock included lots of PUFFINS, plus:
WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, COMMON LOON, LAUGHING GULLS, RUDDY TURNSTONES, RED
KNOT, ROSEATE and COMMON TERNS, and ATLANTIC PUFFINS.
On Fourth Machias Lake there were EASTERN TOWHEE, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and a
family of MERLINS.
In Passamaquoddy Bay there were BONAPARTE GULLS, 1 WILSON'S PETREL, and
COMMON TERNS. At Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge there were BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO and KINGFISHER.
