Along the Cape Elizabeth waterfront Saturday morning at Kettle Cove there
was a 2nd-summer GLAUCOUS GULL on grassy knoll & ledge next to boat ramp.
Two BRANT were seen at Egg Rock in Frenchman's Bay near Bar Harbor on 7/2.
A FOX SPARROW was seen on Roque Island in Eastern Maine.
SHOREBIRDS are starting their fall migration through the state several
species were seen at Biddeford Pool, Scarborough marsh and Phippsburg.
York County
Birds at Deer Field Estates in North Berwick included: INDIGO BUNTINGS,
SCARLET TANAGERS, PRAIRE WARBLERS, EASTERN WOOD PEWEE, 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS,
one GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, and a PURPLE FINCH.
At Goose Rocks there were BONAPARTE'S GULLS and COMMON TERNS.
At the Hills Beach section of Biddeford Pool there was a DUNLIN, 3
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and BONAPARTE'S GULLS. Seen
from Eastern Point were several WILSON'S PETRELS, NORTHERN GANNETS, BLACK
GUILLEMOTS, and COMMON LOONS.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was along the Ferry Road in Saco.
A RED-NECKED GREBE and 3 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen off the Bay View
section of Saco.
At the Saco Heath there were PRAIRE, PINE, NASHVILLE and other WARBLERS plus
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, EASTERN TOWHEES, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS.
Scarborough Marsh Area
At Pine Point there were 2 WHIMBRELS, 4 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and 1
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER. Behind the Pelreco building there were GREATER and
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
GREAT EGRET, and LITTLE BLUE and TRICOLORED HERON. Along Eastern Road in
Scarborough there were 6 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, WILLETS, GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, MARSH WREN and both species of SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.
Out on Stratton Island there were a total of 7 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS and
nesting COOT. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was found destroying TERN EGGS and
killing nestlings. Off shore there were WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS and BLACK
GUILLEMOTS.
Greater Portland and western Maine
At Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth a one hour (7-8 am) sea watch
from the Lobster Shack produced: 1 JAEGER, probably a Parasitic, 25 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS, 20 GANNETS, ROSEATE, COMMON and ARCTIC TERNS and 15 COMMON
LOONS.
A TENNESEE WARBLER was seen on Macworth Island in Falmouth.
In Lovell there was a BALD EAGLE.
In Sweden there was a SCARLET TANAGER.
 In Bridgton there was ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS and CEDAR WAXWINGS.
Over in Wilton there was a CAROLINA WREN, AMERICAN BITTERN, several species
of WARBLERS, and a SCARLET TANAGER.
A PRAIRIE WARBLER was seen in Topsham.
Midcoast
In Phippsburg there was a PEREGRINE FALCON. At Seawall Beach near Phippsburg
there were 20 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 6 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, and 8 ROSEATE and 20 COMMON TERNS.
At Reid State Park in Georgetown there were PIPING PLOVERS and ROSEATE,
COMMON and LEAST TERNS.
A whale watch out of Boothbay saw GREATER and MANX SHEARWATERS and WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS.
Eastern Maine
Report from Bar Harbor included RED-THROATED LOON off South Gouldsboro. Up
to 10 COMMON LOONS were seen in Frenchman Bay. NORTHERN FULMARS were seen
daily 40 mi SE of Bar Harbor until 7/2 and none after that date. GREATER
SHEARWATERS seen daily off Bar Harbor. MANX SHEARWATER were seen on 6/30 12
mi south of Petit Manan Island. SOOTY SHEARWATER were seen 10 mi south of
Mt. Desert Rock on 6/29. WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were seen daily on whale
watch trips in Frenchman Bay just off town of Bar Harbor. A few LEACH'S
STORM-PETRELS were seen daily on whale watch trips, 2 off Egg Rock in
Frenchman Bay 7/2. NORTHERN GANNETS were seen daily both offshore and in
Frenchman Bay. GREAT CORMORANTS were seen daily in Frenchman Bay, one
carrying nesting material to Thrumcap Island on 7/1. A PARASITIC JAEGER was
seen about 20 miles SE of Mt. Desert Rock on 7/3. COMMON TERNS are seen
daily at mouth of Frenchman Bay. ARCTIC TERNS were seen off Petit Manan
Island daily from morning whale watch trip. Fifteen COMMON MURRES were on
Petit Manan Island along with 42 RAZORBILLS, and 80 to 100 ATLANTIC PUFFINS.
A Trip in the CAT ferry from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth NS on 7/8: counted 2
COMMON LOONS, 1500 GREATER SHEARWATER, 12 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 400 WILSON'S
STORM PETRELS, 10 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 28 GANNETS, several small flocks of
DOWITCHERS, 15 LAUGHING GULLS, 3 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 20 ARCTIC and 50
COMMON TERNS, 4 RAZORBILLS, and 6 PUFFINS.
A BARRED OWL and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK were found in Dennysville.
A GRAY JAY was seen in Cutler.
At Grand Lake Stream there were 2 CAPE MAY, BAY-BREASTED, and BLACK and
WHITE WARBLERS.
A GRAY JAY was in Machiasport and Columbia Falls.
In Township 19 there were 40 UPLAND SANDPIPERS and 60 VESPER SPARROWS.
Birds seen in the Baring Unit of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge included
3 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS, 1 WILLOW FLYCATCHER, 2 WARBLING VIREOS, 3
GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, 9 VIRGINIA RAILS, 7 SORA, 2 MARSH WRENS, and 2
BLUE-WINGED TEAL. Elsewhere in Moosehorn there was a KESTREL, EASTERN
MEADOWLARK, BALD EAGLE, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and HOODED MERGANSERS.
Central Maine
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Richmond.
MARSH WRENS and EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Belgrade.
A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen in Smithfield.
A BALD EAGLE was in Newport.
In Bangor's Penjajawoc Marsh, Wed. July 3, a LEAST BITTERN, 2 GREEN HERONS,
a GREAT EGRET, and 4 GREAT BLUE HERONS were seen.
Northern Maine
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was in Houlton.
A MERLIN was found in Fort Kent.
