MAINE AUDUBON SOCIETY BIRD ALERT
WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2002
KAY GAMMONS and STEVE POLLOCK, COMPILERS
On June 22 two ROYAL TERNS were seen at Seawall Beach in Phippsburg.
York County
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was in York along Rt 95.
At Gooserocks Beach there were 3 pair of PIPING PLOVERS, two pair were on the
nest and one pair was with young.
A COMMON LOON and 2 NORTHERN GANNETS were seen off Bay View Beach in Saco. At
Goosefare Brook beach there were PIPING PLOVERS.
Scarborough Marsh
On the Wednesday morning bird walk at of the Nature Center the following were
seen, GREAT BLUE HERON eating an eel across from the nature center, 5 species
of SWALLOWS at Pelreco and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, GREAT EGRETS, and
BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Pine Point Narrows.
Around the Scarborough marsh area this week there were NELSON’S and SALT
MARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, GREAT EGRETS, LITTLE BLUE, GREAT BLUE and
TRICOLORED HERONS,and BLUE WINGED and GREEN-WINGED TEALS. Around the upland
areas of the marsh there were several species of WARBLERS, ROSE BREASTED
GROSBEAKS, BALTIMORE ORIOLES, ALDER and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, and BLACK BILLED
CUCKOO.
ROSEATE, ARCTIC and COMMON TERNS were at Pine Point along with a dozen or so
BONAPARTE’S GULLS.
Greater Portland and western Maine
At the Kettle Cove parking lot in Cape Elizabeth there was a 2nd year ICELAND
GULL, however the description did not rule out a small GLAUCOUS GULL.
On a Casco Bay whale watch there were 100 COMMON TERNS and 2 BALD EAGLES.
BOBOLINKS were seen in South Bridgeton.
ORCHARD ORIOLES, SORA, and VIRGINA RAILS were seen at Capisic Pond.
A COMMON LOON with a chick was seen on Highland Lake.
HOUSE WRENS are nesting in Pownal.
Central Maine
The list from Turner included UPLAND SANDPIPER, WHIP-POOR-WILL and 3 EVENING
GROSBEAKS.
EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Richmond.
A pair of BLACK TERNS were at the boat landing of Messalonskee Lake on right
side of Rt. 27. Also in Belgrade were EVENING GROSBEAKS, PURPLE MARTINS,
AMERICAN BITTERN, BANK SWALLOWS, and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER.
A MOURNING WARBLER was heard singing in Oakland.
A WHIP-POOR-WILL was seen in Norrigewalk.
In Dixmont there were WOOD and HERMIT THRUSHES, VEERY, NASHVILLE, CHESTNUT-
SIDED, BLACK THROATED GREEN, BLACK AND WHITE WARBLERS, an OVENBIRD, and
COMMON RAVENS.
Six OSPREY were seen along the Penobscot River in Bangor.
On June 30, 2 GREEN HERONS were at Bangor's Penjajawoc Marsh and on on July
2, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK perched on the roof of the Fields Pond Nature Center in
Holden.
Northern Maine
In Township 20 there were MOURNING WARBLER, MAGNOLIA and BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLERS and BOREAL CHICKADEES.
Eastern Maine
Along the Burn Road in Topsfield there were 1 female SPRUCE GROUSE with 3
young, 1 BLACK BACKED WOODPECKER, GRAY JAYS, 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER, 2 TENNESSEE
WARBLERS, 1 RED CROSSBILL, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHERS, and 2 OLIVE SIDED FLYCATCHERS. The Burn Road can be visited only
on weekends because of a logging operation.
