A PAINTED BUNTING was seen by several birders over a 4 day period at Biddeford Pool. It has not been since for a few days. There was a sighting of a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in Limingtion. The migration is slowing down. WARBLERS are still arriving, SHOREBIRDS are seen along the coast and SCOTERS and BRANT were seen on inland lakes.
York County
A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was by the Park and Ride in York near I-95. Another BLUE-WINGED WARBLER along with ALDER FLYCATCHER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WOOD THRUSH, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were seen along Bog Road in York. A SCARLET TANAGER was elsewhere in York.
In Wells at the Merriland River Bridge there was a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, BLACK-THOATED GREEN, and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS. Two MOURNING WARBLERS and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO were at Laudholm Farm.
The list from Kennebunk Plains included RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, NORTHERN HARRIER, several WARBLER species, GRASSHOPPER, FIELD, VESPER and SAVANNAH SPARROWS, UPLAND SANDPIPERS, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, YELLOW-BELLIED CUCKOO, and GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER among others. PURPLE MARTINS were seen along Great Hill Road in Kennebunk Beach and Drakes Island in Wells.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, PRAIRIE WARBLER, and FIELD SPARROW were seen along a power line in Berwick.
In Hollis Center there was a WHIP-POOR-WILL calling, a SCARLET TANAGER was seen along with several pairs of EASTERN TOWHEES.
Shorebirds at Biddeford Pool included 3 RED KNOTS, RUDDY TURNSTONES, WILLETS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.
Scarborough Marsh Area
At Scarborough marsh along Eastern Rd there were 3 male WILSON'S PHALAROPES in pannes. Pine Point shorebirds included 9 RED KNOTS, 4 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, RUDDY TURNSTONES, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and ARCTIC, ROSEATE, and COMMON TERNS.
Greater Portland and western Maine
At Broad Cove in Cape Elizabeth there were 2 CAROLINA WRENS, 4 LAUGHING GULLS and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD. This week at Hinckley Park in South Portland there were: 1 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, 1 MOURNING WARBLER and a GLOSSY IBIS.
Two pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES are nesting in the vicinity of Capisic Pond in Portland. Also at Capisic were CAROLINA WREN, SORA and VIRGINIA RAIL and MARSH WRENS.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen in Pownal.
Ten BRANT were seen on Flagstaff Lake, near Stratton, Maine.
Six WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were on Richardson Lake, located off of Rt.16, located in Magalloway PLT, Maine.
In Brownfield Bog -the following birds were seen: 4 VIRGINIA RAILS, COMMON SNIPE, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, ALDER, WILLOW AND LEAST FLYCATCHERS, EASTERN WOOD-PEEWEE, EASTERN KINGBIRD, YELLOW-THROATED, RED-EYED, BLUE-HEADED, and WARBLING VIREO, and several species of WARBLERS.
On East Kennebago Mountain there were BICKNELL'S THRUSH, 12 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 5 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, 5 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS plus 8 other WARBLER species, 4 SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and VEERY.
Central Maine
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a COOPER'S HAWK, and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO were found in Turner.
An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in Lisbon Falls.
Seen in North New Portland this past week were GRAY JAY, 2 LOUISANA WATERTHRUSHES, MOURNING WARBLER, and SWAINSON'S and WOOD THRUSHES.
In Orono, on the first a CLAY-COLORD SPARROW and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO were singing.
At Sunkhaze Meadows near Old Town there were 25 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, 4 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS, 1 GRAY JAY, 2 MOURNING, 3 TENNESSEE and 5 PALM WARLBERS, and EVENING GROSBEAKS.
Northern Maine
This week in Millinocket area there were: ALDER and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WINTER WREN, BOBOLINK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 16 WARBLER species and 4 VIREO species including PHILADELPHIA.
The list from Houlton included BLACKPOLL and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
Midcoast
Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston there was a WILSON'S PHALAROPE.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen in Damariscotta.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was found in Dresden.
On Seawall Beach in Phippsburg there were 10 PIPING PLOVERS, 60 SANDERLINGS, 1 RED KNOT, 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 60 BLACK-BELLIED and 6 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and 100 SEMIPALMATED and 10 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.
On Monhegan notables included RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, WOOD DUCK among numerous other species.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was seen in Boothbay.
Eastern Maine
Subadult GANNETS are being seen daily in Frenchman Bay. Two subadult GREAT CORMORANTS were seen at Thrumcap Island, one at Old Soaker, one at Egg Rock. Twelve WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were at Egg Rock, a RED-THROATED LOON in winter plumage was off Ironbound Island. Ten to twenty PURPLE SANDPIPERS were on Egg Rock. A BALD EAGLE chick is now able to stand on edge of nest on Sheep Porcupine Island. The Fish and Wildlife Service banded two PEREGRINE FALCON chicks on Champlain Mountain.
