On the 28th a BLACK VULTURE briefly passed over the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine, in the company of 3 TURKEY VULTURES. A HOARY REDPOLL was seen again in the flock of about 100 COMMON REDPOLLS in Belgrade. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES are present in the southwest to downeast coastal areas and are very local in low numbers in land. We have yet to record a regional arrival of large numbers. AMERICAN WOODCOCK also are present very locally in several areas. The WATERFOWL migration is spotty with 1 to 3 birds of several species being reported.
York County Seven EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK and 1 TURKEY VULTURE were located in York.
A BARRED OWL and 8 HORNED LARKS were on Gooserocks Beach in Kennebunk.
Twenty PURPLE SANDPIPERS and a TURKEY VULTURE were seen at the Hills Beach section of Biddeford Pool.
At the Saco yacht club this past week at various times there were 1 BALD EAGLE, COMMON and HOODED MERGANSERS, 2 male GREEN WINGED TEAL, and a pair of SCAUP.
Greater Portland and western Maine A GADWALL was located in back of the Nestling Duck gift shop on Pine Pt. Rd (near Clam Bake) Scarborough. Two SNOW BUNTINGS were at the Lighthouse Motel in Pine Point. At Dunstan Landing there were 1 GREAT BLUE HERON, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was near the railroad tracks at Pine Point. Forty two CEDAR WAXWINGS and some COMMON REDPOLLS were along Broad Turn Road in Scarborough.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen at 231 Fowler Road in Cape Elizabeth. Five BRANT and a BLACK LEGGED KITTIWAKE were at Two Lights.
An ICELAND GULL was at East End Beach in Portland.
An ICELAND GULL was at Willard Beach in South Portland.
Nineteen BRANT were at Spring Point in South Portland.
An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was seen in Cumberland.
Four TURKEY VULTURES were in Falmouth over Route 100.
One TURKEY VULTURE was in a tree in Windham on Route 302,
Over in Bridgeton were 30-40 WAXWINGS, at least one of them was a BOHEMIAN WAXWING.
Midcoast Seven RING-NECKED DUCKS and a HOODED MERGANSER were in Woolwich.
A GREAT BLUE HERON was found in Wiscasset.
At the Westkeag marsh in Thomaston there were 10 NORTHERN PINTAILS and 3 GREEN-WINGED TEALS.
A RED-THROATED LOON was seen in Pemaquid.
Eastern Maine On Mount Desert Island there were 10 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 2 NORTHERN GANNETS, RAVENS, BALD EAGLES, and CEDAR WAXWINGS.
A flock of COMMON GRACKLES and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS appeared on Lyons St. in Machias. Dr. Kraus has been keeping records for 20 years said that this is the earliest she can recall them arriving. Also in Machias were COMMON REDPOLLS and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS. Central Maine In Turner this week there were 3 HORNED LARKS and 35 COMMON REDPOLLS.
Four male wood ducks were in the Muddy River in Topsham. Four AMERICAN WOODCOCK and 8 HOODED MERGANSERS were also seen in Topsham.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE is still at the Brunswick High School. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and a NORTHERN FLICKER were also seen in Brunswick.
A flock of about 150 COMMON REDPOLLS were in Augusta.
About 25 COMMON REDPOLLS were in Dixmont.
In Bangor there were 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and a few RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was near the Bangor airport.
Northern Maine In Woodland this week there were PINE GROSBEAKS, 6 RED CROSSBILLS, and COMMON REDPOLLS.
A BALD EAGLE was seen in Presque Isle.
An ICELAND GULL was in Caribou.
