BALD EAGLES were widely reported in the coastal estuaries. ROBINS were wide
spread in York and portions of Cumberland counties.
York County
A HERMIT THRUSH was located in the woods near the chain link fence at Fort
Foster in Kittery.
An AMERCIAN KESTREL was seen from the Maine Turnpike in York.
An early flock of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS was observed along an ice covered
Barrell Mill Pond along Lindsey Road in York.
At Biddeford Pool this week there were 20 HORNED LARKS behind Hatties Deli.
Off Eastern Point there were at least 33 NORTHERN GANNETS, 1 GREATER SCAUP,
and BLACK GUILLEMOTS.
At the Saco Yacht Club there were at different times 8 HOODED and 7 COMMON
MERGANSERS, 5 LESSER SCAUP, and 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS. CEDAR WAXWINGS were
seen at several locations along Beach Street and the Ferry Road in Saco.
Greater Portland and western Maine
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen along Hackmatack Road in Scarborough. The two
NORTHERN PINTAILS continue to be seen at Scarborough marsh across from the
nature center. A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR were at Pine
Point. An AMERICAN KESTREL was at Winnock's Neck.
There were lots of BARRED OWL reports throughout the Greater Portland area.
Five ICELAND GULLS were seen along the Portland waterfront at low tide on
Saturday. A GLAUCOUS GULL was at East End Beach. A CEDAR WAXWING and a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW were at Capisic Pond.
In South Portland at the Mill Creek Hannaford there were 2 ICELAND and a
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (1st-winter) bathing, preening and flying around
the creek area, watched for ~ 30 minutes. Over at Willard Beach there were
ICELAND GULLS in various plumages at different times during the week. PINE
GROSBEAKS were seen in South Portland near Circuit City and in Gorham.
In Westbrook a GREAT HORNED OWL was hunting, in the light rain, off Karen
Drive.
CEDAR WAXWINGS were in Pownal.
Two BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were in South Freeport.
On the Androscoggin River in Dixfield there were 20 HOODED and 2 COMMON
MERGANSERS.
In Wilton there were: 250 to 300 COMMON REDPOLLS eating thistle seed and
snow fleas, 1 possibly 2 HOARY REDPOLLS, 6 PINE GROSBEAKS, 25 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS, 3 SNOW BUNTINGS, I RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, 2 COMMON GRACKLES, 2
SAW-WHET OWLS, 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE, 1 BARRED OWL, 1 BALD EAGLE, and 3 RAVENS.
Central Maine
In Richmond this week there was a BARRED OWL and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was at the landfill in Augusta. There was a report of a
HOARY REDPOLL in a flock of 100 COMMON REDPOLLS in Augusta.
On the Unity College Campus in Unity there was a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and a
BOREAL CHICKADEE.
On February 15, 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS visited Maine Audubon's Fields Pond
Nature Center in Holden and ate crabapples.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE watched chickadees at a bird feeder in Brewer.
On Sunday February 17 a BARRED OWL flew through some dark hemlocks in Old
Town.
Midcoast
On the north side of US Route 1 in Woolwich there were 3 RING-NECKED DUCKS
along with HOODED MERGANSERS.
Forty HOODED MERGANSERS were seen near the Taste Of Maine restaurant in
Woolwich.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found in Dresden.
A COOPER'S HAWK was in Bath. By the Stinson factory in Bath there was a
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.
In Phippsburg there was a NORTHERN SAW-WHET and a BARRED OWL along with a
COOPER'S HAWK.
A TURKEY VULTURE  was in Camden.
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were in Warren.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and COMMON REDPOLLS were found in Hope.
At Blue Hill Falls on Rt. 175 as the tide was going out of Salt Pond there
were 33 PURPLE SANDPIPER and a BALD EAGLE.
A SNOWY OWL and a BALD EAGLE were on Monhegan.
Eastern Maine
On Sat. February 16, 200 SNOW BUNTINGS flocked and flew downeast in
Trescott.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER and a NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen at Marlboro Beach near
Ellsworth.
Six BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 2 PINE SISKINS and scattered COMMON REDPOLLS were in
Machias.
Two PINE GROSBEAKS were in West Lubec.
On the road to Quoddy near the peat bogs a flock of about 70 - 80 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS were eating Juniper berries and drinking in that area.
Two BOREAL CHICKADEES were along the Burn Road in Topsfield.
Northern Maine
The list from Houlton included 50 COMMON REDPOLLS, 1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW,
3 EVENING GROSBEAKS, 15 PINE GROSBEAKS, DARK EYED JUNCOS, and a BALD EAGLE.
In Fort Kent this week there were COMMON REDPOLLS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS,
and a BOREAL CHICKADEE.
