TWO GREAT GRAY OWLS were reported in the state this past week. One was seen
on the West side of the road between Damariscotta and Walpole about 1/2 mile
north of Meetinghouse Road. Several people have looked for this bird but
were unable to relocate it. The second GREAT GRAY OWL was seen just west of
Route 191 on Route 9 in Wesley down in eastern Maine. An OVENBIRD was
observed at feeders for 3 days in Waterford. A LESSER SCAUP was at Fort
Halifax in Winslow. In Brewer, there has been an immature WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW at a feeder along with WHITE-THROATED and SONG SPARROWS. A HERMIT
THRUSH was found in the shrubbery along the Penobscot River in Orono. Also
this week there were some early arriving waterfowl.
York County
An EASTERN TOWHEE and a BALD EAGLE were seen at the mouth of the Cape
Neddick River in York.
Among the 33 species seen at the Wells Reserve on the 7th were: CEDAR
WAXWING, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, PILEATED WOODPECKER, RED-TAILED HAWK, and
NORTHERN SHRIKE.
Thirty HORNED LARKS and 2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were at Goose Rocks.
At the Saco Yacht Club there were 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, COMMON and HOODED
MERGANSERS, 1 WOOD and 5 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and a BALD EAGLE.
A pair of BALD EAGLES were working the fishing holes on Bear Pond in
Waterford.
Greater Portland and western Maine
Two NORTHERN PINTAILS continue to be seen at Scarborough marsh across from
the nature center. An AMERICAN KESTREL was at Winnock's Neck. Two light
phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were along Highland Road in Scarborough.
BRANT were seen near the lobster shack at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth.
A HERMIT THRUSH was on the Eastern Prom in Portland feeding in a sumac
bramble. An ICELAND GULL was at Martin's Point. Five ICELAND GULLS were at
East End Beach. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the sewage plant off Marginal
Way.
Three ICELAND GULLS were seen at Willard Beach in South Portland.
Two BALD EAGLES were seen at Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm Sanctuary in
Falmouth.
A SNOWY OWL was on Fieldstone Drive in North Yarmouth.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was sighted at exit 20 in Freeport.
Fifty BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and 30 COMMON REDPOLLS were in Pownal.
A male HOODED MERGANSER was seen in the Jordan River in Raymond.
A lone BOREAL CHICKADEE was seen in a spruce tree in New Sweden. Also in New
Sweden were large flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS and a few PINE SISKINS.
A SPRUCE GROUSE was seen at the Sunday River ski area.
Two NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE, and 125 COMMON REDPOLLS were
in Wilton.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was in Bridgton.
Midcoast
     Behind the Stinson factory in Bath there were: 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, 9
COMMON MERGANSERS, and a BELTED KINGFISHER.
A BARRED OWL was seen in West Bath.
A BELTED KINGFISHER was in Phippsburg.
A SHORT-EARED OWL, 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK were found
at Reid State Park by participants in a Merrymeeting Audubon field trip.
A GLAUCOUS GULL, 100 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 1 HERMIT THRUSH, and a FOX SPARROW
were at Pemaquid.
Two BARRED OWLS were in Walpole.
Eleven RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen at Damariscotta Mills. In Damariscotta
there was a BALTIMORE ORIOLE, 1 AMERICAN WIGEON, 25 HOODED MERGANSERS, and
25 RING-NECKED DUCKS.
PINE GROSBEAKS were seen in Warren.
On Monhegan this week there were 4 BALD EAGLES, 2 SNOW BUNTINGS, 1 SNOWY
OWL, and TREE SPARROWS.
Eastern Maine
In Bar Harbor there was a TURKEY VULTURE, 2 SNOWY OWLS, and 20 PINE
GROSBEAKS.
In Ellsworth in the vicinity where Rt.1 & Rt.3 cross over the Union River
and slightly down stream there were 3 COMMON and 7 HOODED MERGANSERS.
Birds seen in Machias included a flock 20-30 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS near the
science building at The University of Maine-Machias. A flock of 8 PURPLE
FINCHES and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS were in the street eating grit, near the court
house. A CAROLINA WREN was at a suet feeder on School Street.  A COOPER'S
HAWK, PINE GROSBEAKS, and a SONG SPARROW were seen on North Street. The FOX
SPARROW continues to be present at the feeder at bottom of college hill.
A NORTHERN PINTAIL was at the marsh in Roque's Bluff.
In Dennysville there were 4 COMMON REDPOLLS and 2 BALD EAGLES.
Central Maine
There were between 150 to 200 COMMON REDPOLLS at feeders on the Post Road in
Bowdoinham.
Ten CEDAR WAXWINGS and 10 AMERICAN ROBINS were found in Richmond.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen behind the King's Court shopping center off
Bangor Street in Augusta.
A BALD EAGLE was seen from the footbridge on the Kennebec in downtown
Waterville.
Five BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, 3 HOODED and 3 COMMON MERGANSERS, and 2 AMERICAN
WIGEON were present at Mill Island Park in Fairfield.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was behind Eastview and Westview dorms on Unity College
Campus.
Good birds in Dixfield included 20 HOODED and 2 COMMON MERGANSERS, and 30
COMMON REDPOLLS.
 Located in Brewer were 20 PINE GROSBEAKS.
An ICELAND GULL was seen in Bangor.
In Orono over 100 COMMON GOLDENEYES were seen on the Penobscot River.
Keeping company with them were about a dozen BARROW'S GOLDENEYES.
Northern Maine
The list from Fort Kent included 24 PINE GROSBEAKS, 15 PINE SISKINS, and 12
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
