A WESTERN TANAGER was found on the Bridgton Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This
bird was seen on December 28th around 8:15 and has not been relocated
although people have been looking for it. The bird was seen drinking water
by a culvert in a Mill Pond off of Steven's Brook. The pond is on the
western end of Maine Street (302) - at the Town Beach- Shorey Park area.
Turn onto Highland Road (1 block beyond the Big Apple) from Main Street to
get to it.
York County
A SNOWY OWL delighted birders at Nubble Light in York. A female KING EIDER
was also reported, along with Purple Sandpipers.  At the Cliff house also in
York was 1 KING EIDER, 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 1 RAZORBILL, and 1 BLACK
GUILLIMOT.
A COMMON REDPOLL was at a feeder in North Berwick
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was at the "Footbridge" parking lot behind
Ogunquit Beach.
Sixty SANDERLINGS and 2 DUNLIN were at Wells Beach.
The Biddeford - Kennebunk CBC had approximately 72 species. Included were
COMMON SNIPE, MEADOWLARK, 40 RAZORBILLS, KESTREL, COMMON REDPOLLS, SAVANNAH
and SWAMP SPARROWS, and a HERMIT THRUSH.
Greater Portland and Western Maine
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and RUSTY BLACKBIRD are still present at the feeders
at Portland News today at the Scarborough industrial park. A RING-NECKED
PHEASANT, BOB-WHITE QUAIL. 1 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, 1 COMMON GRACKLE, and
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were also seen in the area. Nine BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKES and 8 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were at Pine Point along with a
RED-THROATED LOON. Two HOODED MERGANSERS and 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS were found
at Scarborough marsh. Eleven HORNED LARKS were at Scarborough Beach.
20 HORNED LARKS were on the Strawberry fields near Two Lights in Cape
Elizabeth. At Two Lights State Park were 35 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 2 GUILLEMOTS,
and 4 GANNETS.
Near the UNUM entrance to the Stroudwater Trail (Portland) was a male PINE
WARBLER. Two CANVASBACKS were at Stroudwater. A SNOWY OWL was at the East
End beach in Portland. An ICELAND GULL was at the treatment plant.
In Westbrook, on Eisenhower Dr., there was a NORTHERN SHRIKE and 15 CEDAR
WAXWINGS.
The Freeport - Brunswick CBC got 80 species. Highlights included RUSTY
BLACKBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, 2 HERMIT THRUSH, 4 BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, 1
AMERICAN WOODCOCK, 1 NORTHERN PINTAIL, COMMON REDPOLL, RED and WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS, 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE, and 2 FOX SPARROWS. In Freeport near Old
County and Webster Roads there were 12 PINE GROSBEAKS.
In North Fryeburg, a CAROLINA WREN was found at the junction of Rt. 113 and
South Chatham road. It was perched up on a pile of brush in the back of a
utility trailer on the East side of the Rt. 113, North of Kimball Brook.
The first Wilton - Weld CBC tallied 39 species and 849 individuals. Unusual
birds included: 1 COMMON LOON, 7 HOODED MERGANSERS, 3 COMMON MERGANSERS, 3
BALD EAGLES (2 adults, 1 imm.), 1 BELTED KINGFIGHER, 21 NORTHERN RAVEN, 40
BOHEMIAN WAXWING, 3 NORTHERN SHRIKE, 34 PINE GROSBEAK, 6 WHITE-WINGED
CROSBILL, and 141 COMMON REDPOLLS.
Forty-two species were located on the Bridgeton CBC. Good birds included 6
PINE and 18 EVENING GROSBEAKS, and 2 PINE SISKINS. Five BALD EAGLES were
seen feeding on a deer carcass on Kezar Lake. Two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS
were at Grafton Notch State Park.
Midcoast
Good birds in Phippsburg - Bath area this week included CAROLINA WREN,
PILEATED WOODPECKER, 6 WOOD DUCKS, BELTED KINGFISHER, 2 BALD EAGLES, and 2
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
A GOSHAWK was found in Appleton.
Eastern Maine
The Schoodic CBC located 2 ICELAND GULLS, 2 RED-THROATED LOONS, 1 GRAY JAY,
1 PINTAIL, 3 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 3 BALD EAGLES, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL, and a HERMIT THRUSH.
Thirty-four species were found on the Bailey Island CBC. Notables included
NORTHERN PINTAIL, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 3 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, and 7
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
Birds were seen during the Topsfield CBC, included: 5 GRAY JAYS, 2 male
SPRUCE GROUSE, 5 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 31 PINE GROSBEAKS, 52 COMMON REDPOLLS,
and 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
Central Maine
The Brewer CBC found 3 species of MERGANSERS, BONAPARTE'S GULL, 3 ICELAND
and 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS, 16 BALD EAGLES, OSPREY, CAROLINA WREN, PEREGRINE
FALCON, 50 SNOW BUNTINGS, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE.
This year's Bangor-Bucksport CBC unofficially totaled a record 61 species,
highlights for this count included COMMON LOONS on Brewer Lake, 2
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 1 OSPREY, six gull species (including Bonaparte's,
glaucous, and Iceland), and a CAROLINA WREN.
Northern Maine
A roost of at least 200 COMMON RAVENS were located in Fort Kent. Also in
Fort Kent were 15 PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS.
The Presque Isle CBC tallied 65 PINE and 17 EVENING GROSBEAKS, 2 ICELAND
GULLS, 3 NORTHERN CARDINALS, 4 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 365 COMMON REDPOLLS, and a
SNOW BUNTING.
