SNOWY OWLS, PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS were seen by numerous
reporters this past week. Unusual was a very late and out of habitat
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW found near the Dragon cement plant along Route 9 in
Portland.
York County
One FOX SPARROW, 1 adult WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and 1
NORTHERN HARRIER were at Goodwin Road at Kittery Point.
In Cape Porpoise there were 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
At the Sanford sewage ponds there was a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, SNOW BUNTINGS, and
15 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
A SNOWY OWL was seen along Ocean Avenue in Wells. At Laudholm Farm in Wells
there were 12 SAW-WHET OWLS.
PINE SISKINS were at Kennebunk Beach.
A PIED BILLED GREBE was on the pond at Fortune's Rocks in Biddeford. At the
Hills Beach section of Biddeford Pool there were 12 WHITE-WINGED and 1 RED
CROSSBILL, 2 COMMON REDPOLLS, 1 PINE GROSBEAK, 20 SNOW BUNTINGS, 6
RED-THROATED LOONS, 6 PINE SISKINS, MERLIN, FIELD and FOX SPARROWS, and
HORNED LARKS. On the beach at Biddeford Pool on Sunday there were 35 RUDDY
TURNSTONES, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 24 SANDERLINGS, 65 DUNLIN, and a few
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS. On the golf course there were 42 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS and 8 SNOW BUNTINGS. Today at the pool there were 30 SNOW BUNTINGS,
9 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 12 PECTORAL , and 16 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.
A SNOWY OWL was seen again behind the Sweetser School in Saco. Seven
RED-THROATED LOONS were at the beach near Goosefare Brook outlet in Saco.
Greater Portland Area
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was at a feeder along East Grande Ave at Pine Point
in Scarborough. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK took a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL near Old
Orchard Lane. On Grondin Pond there were 2 SNOW GEESE, and one was a BLUE
FORM. Thirty COMMON REDPOLLS were at the Scarborough Industrial Park.
Another SNOWY OWL was in the Back Cove area in Portland, sitting on the
grass directly across from Payson Park. Also in Back Cove there was a
LAPLAND LONGSPUR and a SAVANNAH SPARROW. At Capisic Pond this week there
were 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, 9 PINE GROSBEAKS, 3 FOX SPARROWS, 1 BALTIMORE
ORIOLE, 1 CEDAR WAXWING, and 1 HERMIT THRUSH. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was in
Portland. Near the Dragon cement plant along Route 9 in Portland there were
AMERICAN PIPITS and SNOW BUNTINGS.
In Cumberland Center there were 10 SNOW BUNTINGS.
Over in Bridgton there were PINE SISKINS, and PINE GROSBEAKS.
One hundred eighty seven SAW-WHET OWLS have been banded in Freeport since
September.
Central Maine
The list from Turner included: YELLOW-RUMPED WARLBER, SAVANNAH SPARROW, PINE
GROSBEAK, COMMON REDPOLL, SNOW BUNTING, and HORNED LARK.
On Sebattus Pond this week there were 500 RUDDY DUCKS, 250 SCAUP, 40 COOT, 1
LONG-TAILED DUCK, and 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
Sighted in Augusta were 12 COMMON REDPOLLS, PINE GROSBEAKS, HERMIT THRUSH,
and a GREAT BLUE HERON was in Dixmont.
Two PINE GROSBEAKS were in Hampden.
On Levenseller Rd. in Holden there were several PINE GROSBEAKS.
Six PINE GROSBEAKS were in Orono and 10 in Bangor. 25 COMMON REDPOLLS were
eating birch seeds in Orono. Five FOX SPARROWS were scratching for millet
seeds in an Orono yard.
Twelve COMMON GOLDENEYES were newly arrived on the Penobscot River in
Bangor.
In the Brewer Industrial Park off Parkway South there were 40+ COMMON
REDPOLLS.
Northern Maine
The list from Houlton this week included: 8 PINE GROSBEAKS, 1 SNOWY OWL,
PINE SISKINS, 9 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, EVENING GROSBEAKS, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE, and
2 FOX SPARROWS.
PINE GROSBEAKS were seen in Fort Kent, Saint Francis and Estcourt.
Midcoast
On Monhegan Island the following were sighted: PALM and YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS, COMMON REDPOLL, NORTHERN FLICKER, HERMIT THRUSH, PINE GROSBEAK,
SNOW BUNTINGS, 4 BALD EAGLES, MERLIN, EASTERN PHOEBE, and AMERICAN WOODCOCK.
At Pemaquid this week there were 4 PINE GROSBEAKS and RED-THROATED LOONS.
Eastern Maine
In Bar Harbor this week there were 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, RED-TAILED
and SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, and PINE SISKINS.
Twenty-three BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were in downtown Machias behind the Machias
One-Stop. An EASTERN TOWHEE visited a feeder today at the bottom of college
hill in Machias. Also there was a FOX and a CHIPPING SPARROW. On campus this
week have been PINE and EVENING GROSBEAKS and 5 SNOW BUNTINGS.
In East Machias there were 5 PINE GROSBEAK.
In Machiasport there were WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. A BALTIMORE ORIOLE was
seen elsewhere in Machiasport. Also in Machiasport on Holmes Bay there was a
TURKEY VULTURE, 2 BARROWS and 7 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 65 BUFFLEHEAD, 2 GLAUCOUS
GULLS, and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
A trip to Centerville produced the following: AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, RUSTY
and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and 4 RUFFED GROUSE.
In Lubec there were 1 SAVANNAH SPARROW, 80 COMMON REDPOLLS, 1 GLAUCOUS GULL,
and 15 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
In West Quoddy there were 20 KITTIWAKES on the 8th.
In Eastport there were 1 GLAUCOUS GULL and 1000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
Observe in Indian Township were 5 PINE GROSBEAK.
Good birds at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge included 5 FOX SPARROWS,
COMMON REDPOLLS, HOODED MERGANSERS, EVENING GROSBEAKS, and NORTHERN HARRIER.
Two male SPRUCE GROUSE, 3 GRAY JAYS, 2 BOREAL CHICKADEES, and 1 PINE
GROSBEAK were along the Burn Road in Topsfield.
 In Kossuth along the Alder Brook Road there was one male SPRUCE GROUSE,
GRAY JAYS, 1 BOREAL CHICKADEE, and 4 PINE GROSBEAKS.
