SNOWY OWLS made appearances at several widely separated localities this past
week. Also reported were FOX SPARROWS, PINE and EVENING GROSBEAKS and COMMON
REDPOLLS. Only a few BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were reported. A CATTLE EGRET was
seen along Route 1 in Kennebunk near the motor vehicle registry. A PACIFIC
LOON was at Parson's Beach in Kennebunk. A BLACK VULTURE was seen south of
Thomaston along Route 1.
York County
A HERMIT THRUSH and 2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS were in York. In York Harbor there
were GREAT BLUE HERON and GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
A SNOWY OWL was seen along the Blackberry Hill Road in North Berwick.
Another SNOWY was seen in South Berwick.
A KING EIDER was along Marginal Way in Ogunquit along with 5 HARLEQUIN
DUCKS. At the Cliff House there were 16 NORTHERN GANNETS and 5 HARLEQUINS. A
SNOWY OWL and 3 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at the Ogunquit marsh.
Six SNOW BUNTINGS were in Kennebunk Beach. Two GREATER YELLOWLEGS were at
Parson's Beach in Kennebunk.
Thirty SNOW BUNTINGS and a NORTHERN HARRIER were at Wells Marsh. A FOX
SPARROW was elsewhere in Wells.
At Biddeford Pool this past week there were 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and several
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS. A small flock of SNOW BUNTINGS were behind Hattie's.
A SNOWY OWL was in back of the Sweetser's School in Saco. At Ferry Beach
there were 2 RED-THROATED LOONS.
At the Sanford Sewage Ponds there were 3 COOT, large numbers of RING-NECKED
and RUDDY DUCKS, 40-50 BUFFLEHEAD, 10 COMMON GOLDENEYES, many GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 1 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 AMERICAN WIGEON, 2 TREE and 1 BARN SWALLOW, 1
NORTHERN FLICKER and 6 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.
Greater Portland
At the Lighthouse motel in Scarborough there were HORNED LARKS. Along the
Little River Road in Scarborough there were 6 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
Fifteen SNOW BUNTINGS were on the Willowdale golf course in Scarborough. A
NORTHERN HARRIER and 6 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were at Spurwink marsh.
The list from Capisic Pond this week included: CAROLINA WREN, 10 CEDAR and 2
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, COOT and 4 HOODED MERGANSERS.
A DICKCISSEL was seen near the Dragon cement plant near the Falmouth -
Portland town line.
Three FOX SPARROWS were in Pownal.
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, a FOX SPARROW and an EASTERN TOWHEE were seen in
Cumberland.
The first flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder in Brunswick.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was at the Fryeburg airport. At Fryeburg Harbor there were
6 PINE GROSBEAKS, 20 HORNED LARKS and 30 SNOW BUNTINGS.
Two PINE SISKINS and 3 COMMON LOONS were seen in Bridgton.
Twenty PINE GROSBEAKS and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET plus COMMON RAVENS were in
South Waterford.
Forty COMMON REDPOLLS were seen at Brownfield Bog.
Ten PINE and a few EVENING GROSBEAKS were in Farmington.
Highlights in Wilton included: 11 PINE GROSBEAKS, 10 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 30
COMMON REDPOLLS, 1 GREAT BLUE HERON, EVENING GROSBEAKS, and an EASTERN
PHOEBE.
Midcoast
In Phippsburg this week there were 4 EVENING and 1 PINE GROSBEAKS, 3 FOX
SPARROWS, 1 PINE SISKIN, 1 WILD TURKEY, and a flock of 40 GRACKLES and
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
Observed in Georgetown were EVENING GROSBEAKS, 2 FOX SPARROWS, 10 PINE
SISKINS, 10 GRACKLES, 1 GREAT EGRET and a HERMIT THRUSH.
Out on Monhegan there were: EASTERN PHOEBE, MERLIN, PALM WARBLER, HERMIT
THRUSH, BROWN THRASHER, and PINE SISKINS.
Eastern Maine
A small flock of SNOW BUNTINGS were seen today in Bancroft.
A blue morph SNOW GOOSE was in Meddybemps.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was along Route 191 in Marion.
In Indian Township there were 5 PINE GROSBEAKS, 40 COMMON REDPOLLS, 2 BOREAL
CHICKADEES and 10 TREE SPARROWS.
A GOLDEN PLOVER was in Machiasport along with 20 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 3
BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
At Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge there were 6 BALD EAGLES, HOODED
MERGANSER, GREAT BLUE HERON, 12 EVENING GROSBEAKS, FOX SPARROW, and 30
AMERICAN WOODCOCK.
Six GREATER YELLOWLEGS were in the Dennys River in Dennysville.
In Topsfield this week there was 1 female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 3 GRAY
JAYS, 3 PINE GROSBEAKS, 8 RED CROSSBILLS and 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
Central Maine
The list from Turner included: KILLDEER, 65 HORNED LARKS, 30 SNOW BUNTINGS,
20 COMMON REDPOLLS, 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 1 PINE GROSBEAK
50 AMERICAN PIPITS and a few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.
In Richmond this week the list included 2 PINE and 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS,
COMMON REDPOLL, SNOW BUNTING, TREE and 4 FOX SPARROWS.
A late OSPREY was in Gardiner.
SNOW BUNTINGS were in Manchester.
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was in China.
EVENING and PINE GROSBEAKS were in Dixmont.
A PINE GROSBEAK was seen in Hermon.
A SNOWY OWL and EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in the Orono area.
Northern Maine
In Houlton this week there were 2 FOX SPARROWS, 2 NORTHERN CARDINALS and 2
PINE GROSBEAKS.
Twenty BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were in Saint Francis and in Allagash there was a
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 1 GOSHAWK and a BOREAL CHICKADEE.
