The reports this week concentrate on fresh water WATERFOWL and SPARROWS.
Most of the wintering SEA DUCKS have not arrived. Most of the other groups
such as SHOREBIRDS, VIREOS and WARBLERS have moved to points south.
York County
On Gerrish Island in Kittery there were 2 COMMON RAVENS, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, 1
RED-THROATED LOON, and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS.
In North Berwick, in addition to the large numbers of WHITE-THROATS and
YELLOW-RUMPS were: 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 1 PALM, and
1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER.
Four PURPLE FINCHES and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW were in York.
A very early drake HARLEQUIN DUCK was at the Cliff House in Ogunquit October
11th.
An AMERICAN KESTREL was at Kennebunk Beach.
The list from Goose Rocks this week included: WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 15
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and 15 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPIERS.
The list from the Sanford sewage ponds included: 14 WOOD DUCKS, 50
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 40 RUDDY DUCKS, 25 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 COOT, 2 GREATER
SCAUP, 2 AMERICAN PIPITS, 17 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 1 MARSH WREN, and a
LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
At the Hills Beach section of Biddeford Pool there were RUBY and
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 1 "IPSWICH" SAVANNAH SPARROW, 6 WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS, and a MERLIN. Behind Hatties at Biddeford Pool there were 2
IPSWICH, 1 VESPER and numerous SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1
DOWITCHER, and 5 DUNLIN. Two LITTLE BLUE HERONS were on the opposite side of
route 208.
A small flock (+/-20) EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were seen in Hollis.
Greater Portland and western Maine
Two NORTHERN HARRIERS and a MERLIN were at Scarborough marsh. At Prout's
Pond off Pleasant Hill Road there were 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE and RUDDY DUCKS.
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth.
A GRAY CATBIRD was at Capisic Pond in Portland. A WINTER WREN and a HERMIT
THRUSH were in Evergreen Cemetery.
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and a FOX SPARROW were seen along Route 9 near the
Falmouth Portland town line.
EVENING and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were seen in Cumberland.
Birding in Wilton along Wilson Stream and in the Foothills Conservancy land
at the head of Wilson Pond included the following highlights: 5 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS, 1 CEDAR WAXWING, 1 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 2 COMMON SNIPE, 1 PINE
SISKIN, 10 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 1 WHITE-WINGED CROSBILL, 10 AMERICAN
PIPITS, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 7 sparrow species which included 1 LINCOLN
SPARROW and 1 FOX SPARROW, 10 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and 1 PALM and 1 PINE
WARBLER.
Midcoast
A CAROLINA WREN was seen in Phippsburg.
Three TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Bath.
One SWAINSON'S and 3 WOOD THRUSH, 17 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 4 WILD TURKEYS,
and a COOPER'S HAWK were in Georgetown.
A GRAY CATBIRD was seen in Camden.
Central Maine
A NASHVILLE WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER and a COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, 2 lingering BOBOLINKS, 1 GOLDEN PLOVER, and a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW were in Turner.
In Lisbon there were 3 KILLDEER and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS.
On Sebattus Pond there were GREATER and LESSER SCAUP, RING-NECKED DUCKS, 10
COOT, 100 RUDDY DUCKS, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen in Belgrade.
In Waterville this week there were 1 immature GREAT CORMORANT, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen by several people along the Ravine Trail
at the Fields Pond Nature Center.
A TURKEY VULTURE was in Brewer.
A BOREAL CHICKADEE was in Orono.
Twenty-five SNOW BUNTINGS were in Bingo.
Northern Maine
In Township 18, 70 miles north of Greenville there were SNOW GEESE, BOREAL
CHICKADEES, GRAY JAYS, and SPRUCE GROUSE.
Good birds in Houlton this week included: WHITE-CROWNED, FOX CHIPPING and
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and a NORTHERN HARRIER.
