York County
At Laudholm beach in Wells there was an AMERICAN PIPIT, a MERLIN and a
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.
At the Kennebunk Plains there was an UPLAND SANDPIPER.
At Biddeford Pool there was a MOURNING WARBLER near the convent, plus a
RED-NECKED GREBE. In the pool there were 2 AMERICAN PIPITS, 1 MARBLED
GODWIT, 2 WHIMBRELS, numerous BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, a few WILLETS, and several PEEP SANDPIPERS. At Hills Beach there was a MARBLED GODWIT, probably the same one as seen in the pool plus, 5 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 5
FORSTER'S TERNS, 1 LITTLE GULL, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 100 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, DUNLIN, DOWITCHERS, 50 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and a RED-NECKED GREBE.
Greater Portland and western Maine
Pine Point in Scarborough there was a LITTLE GULL and good numbers of
BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
Three COMMON NIGHTHAWKS and a PEREGRINE FALCON were in Yarmouth.
In Wilton there was a good assortment of SPARROWS including: LINCOLN'S, VESPER, CHIPPING, and CLAY-COLORED, an AMERICAN BITTERN and a
SWAINSON'S THRUSH.
Over Bald Mountain in Weld there was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON.
In Bridgton there were AMERICAN WOODCOCK, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, and a COMMON LOON with young.
Midcoast
A few notable birds from an outing to Monhegan Island organized by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science and Vermont Bird Tours from September 13-16 are BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 17 species of WARBLERS, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, DICKCISSEL, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD. Other Monhegan reports mentioned RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, DICKCISSEL, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD
Eastern Maine
Hawk-watching on Beech Mountain. in Acadia on Sept. 15 produced 67 RAPTORS which included: 8 BROAD-WINGED, 1RED-TAILED HAWK, 5 NORTHERN HARRIER,11 AMERICAN KESTREL, 1 MERLIN, 8 OSPREY, and 33 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS.
The fall HAWK migration over Cadillac Mt. on 9/16 included 8 TURKEY VULTURES.
There were 41 TURKEY VULTURES seen over Lucerne Hills on 9/15.
At various times over Frenchman's Bay there were 14 NORTHERN HARRIERS,
120 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 21 COOPER'S HAWKS, 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 35 KESTRELS, 12 MERLIN and 80 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.
On the Bar Harbor bar there were 30 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 12 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 50 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 50 SEMIPALMATED and 50 LEAST SANDPIPERS.
Off shore this week five to 10 FULMARS were seen nearly every day, from Bar Harbor whale watch boats. Seen from the Bar Harbor to Yarmouth Nova.Scotia ferry, The CAT, on 9/18 were 375 GREATER SHEARWATYER, 150 WILSON STORM PETRELS, four LEACH'S STORMPETRELS, 100+RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and a single GRAY CATBIRD attempted to land on the CAT ferry, 30 miles out on 9/12, but couldn't catch up.
Seen 30 miles south off Frenchman Bay on 9/15 were 200 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES 15 and 1 POMARINE JAEGER was at mouth of Frenchman Bay on 9/17.
Fifteen POMARINE JAEGERS were seen 15 miles south off Schoodic Pt. on 9/3, PARASITIC JAEGERS and an immature LONG-TAILED JAEGER was seen 40 miles southeast of Schoodic Pt. on 9/14.Forty ATLANTIC PUFFINS were seen within 5 miles of Petit Manan Island.
Off Mount Desert Rock were the following: GREATER SHEARWATERS and 18
WILSON'S PETRELS were seen daily south and east of Mt. Desert Rock, SOOTY SHEARWATERS were seen 15 miles east of Mt. Desert Rock on 9/15, 250+ RED PHALAROPES were south of Mt. Desert Rock on 9/16, 14 RAZORBILLS were off Mt. Desert Rock on 9/16.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was at Sieur de Monts Spring in Acadia National Park.
A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen daily in Bar Harbor through 9/18
There was a minor BELTED KINGFISHER "Flight" on 9/13 with a total of 24 birds seen around various islands in Frenchman Bay that day.
Central Maine
Good birds in Turner this week included: PALM and YELLOW WARBLER, HORNED LARK, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 1 BOREAL CHICKADEE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 2 TENNESEE WARBLERS, 1 MERLIN, 20-35, AMERICAN PIPITS, and 13 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.
In Winslow this week there were WARBLERS migrating through which included: TENNESSEE, plus there were 3 species of the common VIREOS.
In Dixmont this week there were 6 EVENING GROSBEAKS, 6 NORTHERN FLICKERS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and 15 WILD TURKEYS.
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen by the frog pond at the Fields Pond Nature Center in Holden.
Northern Maine
In Fort Kent there were YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, NORTHERN FLICKERS, and DARK-EYED JUNCOS.
