A SANDHILL CRANE was reported from Durham. The bird was present for about 2
days, but has apparently left. Much arrived this week. This includes first
arrivals as well as significant increases in numbers. The waterfowl
migration is in full swing as fields become snow free and small ponds start
to open. On the land bird side this week saw the arrival of EASTERN PHOEBE,
NORTHERN FLICKER, TREE SWALLOW. FOX SPARROW reports were confined to the
southern 1/2 of the state. ROBINS appeared in Houlton and Presque Isle and
were abundant in the snow free areas of fields and yards in York and
Cumberland counties. OSPREYS arrived in coastal and central regions. TURKEY
VULTURE reports were too numerous to mention individually. Wading birds
arrivals included GREAT EGRET, GLOSSY IBIS, and LITTLE BLUE HERON. COMMON
SNIPES were present in several localities where greater than 20 individuals
were present.
York County
On the York River there were 4 WOOD DUCKS, 1 BALD EAGLE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK,
and an EASTERN PHOEBE.
In the Wells Harbor salt pannes were a pair of RING-NECKED DUCK, a pair of
NORTHERN PINTAIL, a GREAT BLUE HERON, 2 NORTHERN HARRIER, and a
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK. A GREAT EGRET and the two SNOW GEESE were still present.
An intergrade COMMON TEAL/AMERICAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was present in the
flooded fields adjacent to the Marshwood Junior High School on Rt. 236 in
Eliot, ME. It had both a prominent white horizontal mark AND a prominent
white vertical mark. Other birds in the wetlands as seen from the athletic
field of the school included at least 30 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3 BLUE-WINGED
TEAL, 26 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 4 HOODED MERGANSERS, 15 WOOD DUCK, 31 COMMON
SNIPE, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 20 HORNED LARKS, 30 KILLDEER, 20 TREE SWALLOWS
and 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
In a yard on South Street in Biddeford there were 2 AMERICAN WOODCOCK and 1
FOX SPARROW. In the Hills Beach section of Biddeford Pool there was a
DICKCISSEL, 4 FOX SPARROWS and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
In Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco there was a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, a
NORTHERN SHOVELER, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, NORTEHRN FLICKERS, EASTERN
PHOEBE, WOOD DUCKS, GREEN-WINGED and BLUE-WINGED TEAL, HOODED MERGASERS and
RING-NECKED DUCKS. An EASTERN PHOEBE and 2 FOX SPARROWS were in a yard and
an OSPREY was over and along the Ferry Road in Saco. A RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER was seen along Tiffany Lane in Saco. Six GLOSSY IBIS were in
Ocean Park. Along Saco's Boom Road there were 1 AMERICAN WIGEON, 5 NORTHERN
PINTAIL, 14 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 21 COMMON SNIPE, numerous KILLDEER, AMERICAN
KESTRELS, EASTERN PHOEBE, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, and TREE
SWALLOW.
Scarborough Marsh Area
At the Pelreco building at Pine point there were at least 5 COMMON SNIPE, 1
LITTLE BLUE HERON a GREAT EGRET, 5 GLOSSY IBIS, numerous GREEN-WING TEAL, 2
BLUE-WING TEAL and 30 TREE SWALLOWS. Behind Clambake Restaurant there was a
GREAT EGRET - Near the Scarborough marsh nature center there were 3 GADWALL,
2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS numerous HOODED MERGANSER and GREEN-WING TEAL , 2
AMERICAN WIGEON, and at least 10 SNOWY EGRETS and 2 EASTERN PHOEBE plus
COMMON SNIPE. At the Scarborough Marsh nature center there was a PIED-BILLED
GREBE.
Greater Portland and western Maine
Along Western Avenue of South Portland, near the airport there was a
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.
Along Stroudwater Street in Westbrook there were 12 WILD TURKEYS.
A BROWN THRASHER was at High Bluff Road, in Cape Elizabeth on Monday. A
birder saw 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS at 18 High Bluff Road, Cape Elizabeth
on Friday April 6. A female NORTHERN HARRIER was at Kettle cove. At Two
Lights there were 6 HORNED LARKS and 2 FOX SPARROWS.
In Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, the first YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER of the
season arrived. Three BOHEMIAN WAXINGS were reported from Stevens Avenue.
The list from Freeport included: NORTHERN HARRIER, WOOD DUCK, COMMON SNIPE
and CHIPPING SPARROW.
Near the Wilton Police Station there were fifteen (15) TURKEY VULTURES
circling Wilson Stream from Franklin Savings Bank to the sewage treatment
plant. Also in Wilton the first EASTERN BLUEBIRD arrived plus a BARRED OWL
was heard calling, and a BELTED KINGFISHER was seen with the ducks on the
Androscoggin.
In Jay this week there were30 COMMON MERGANSERS, 15 HOODED MERGANSERS, 12
WOOD DUCKS, and 6 RING-NECKED DUCKS.
Midcoast
A NORTHERN HARRIER, RING-NECKED DUCKS and GREEN-WINGED TEAL were in
Woolwich.
An OSPREY was in Bath.
In Edgecomb there were 2 early BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and a COOPER'S HAWK.
A SNOW GOOSE was in Belfast.
On the Westkeag marsh in Thomaston there were GREAT BLUE HERON, GREEN-WINGED
TEAL and NORTHERN PINTAILS.
The list from Monhegan included: 20 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, EASTERN PHOEBE,
FOX SPARROW, KILLDEER, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, CEDAR WAXWING, WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILL, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN BITTERN, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and
NORTHERN HARRIER.
Eastern Maine
OSPREYS returned to Bar Harbor.
In Machiasport two "first of season" sightings included a GREAT BLUE HERON
on a tidal stream, and a NORTHERN HARRIER skimming the alder tops near the
shore.
At Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge there were GREAT BLUE HERON, 2 pair of
BALD EAGLES on nests, RING-NECKED DUCKS, HOODED and COMMON MERGANSERS,
EVENING GROSBEAKS, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, AMERICAN KESTREL and NORTHERN HARRIER.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Brooklin.
Central Maine
In Turner this week there were EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW and 10 HORNED
LARKS.
TREE SWALLOWS were seen in Augusta and Belgrade.
RING-NECKED DUCKS were on Great Pond Stream and the first COMMON LOON
dropped in for a visit last Wednesday.
Two GREAT BLUE HERONS were flying over Route 27 in the area of Austin Bog in
Belgrade.
OSPREYS were seen in Clinton and Pittsfield.
TREE SWALLOWS were seen in Plymouth.
Northern Maine
HOODED and COMMON MERGANSERS were found in Houlton along with AMERICAN
WOODCOCK and ROBINS.
In Presque Isle this week there were AMERICAN WOODCOCK, ROBINS and a GREAT
BLUE HERON.
A RUFFED GROUSE was seen in Fort Kent.
