- Tri-County
Literacy Volunteers
The Casco Bay LVA affiliate and the Greater Bath and Lincoln County
LVA affiliate have merged to become the Tri-County Literacy Volunteers.
In demonstration of its objectives to identify and serve community needs,
and to provide the opportunity and encouragement to all age groups for
self-education, the Library teams with the Tri-County Literacy Volunteers
of America to provide
materials specifically geared to the adult New Reader. Supported since
1990 through an endowed fund in memory of Mae Chatterjee, the New Reader
collection has grown to include English as a Second Language, family
literacy and tutor training materials as well as general interest and
recreational reading.
- Community
Health Information Partnership
The Community Health Information Partnership (CHIP) joins Curtis Memorial
Library, Mid Coast Hospital and Parkview Adventist Medical Center in
an effort to provide up-to-the-minute health and wellness information
and educational programs. Over the first year, the library has purchased
hundreds of new volumes and has subscribed to powerful databases with
the newest health and medical information available for professionals
and the public. Collections for early
education and day care providers and a collection of health
videos are also available. Health education programs, and instructional
sessions in using the databases, are held both at the hospital and library
as part of the partnership.
NOTE: CHIP welcomes other health service providers and institutions
to join the partnership to help serve health information needs of our
community.
- Cornerstones
of Science
Cornerstones of Science (COS) is a Curtis Memorial Library initiative
to make science more accessible through the identification, promotion,
and preservation of superb books of science and technology. A growing
selection of Cornerstones books designated by the COS logo is on
the library shelves along with a variety of reviews posted on the
Web (http://www.cornerstonesofscience.org).
Books are chosen and reviewed by scientists, teachers, parents, and
young people.
COS also sponsors public programming in the library and community. Programs
are designed to support the content and spirit of Cornerstones books by sponsoring
Cornerstones authors, topical presentations of interest to the community, adult
and parent-child reading groups, teacher workshops using Cornerstones material,
and student exhibitions of work with Cornerstones books.
- Midcoast
Business Resource Center
Curtis Memorial Library has joined with the Midcoast Council for Business
Development & Planning (MCBDP) and Southern New Hampshire University to form
the MidCoast Business Resource Center (MBRC). Building on the foundation
of business materials provided by Southern New Hampshire University,
the library continues to collect print and media resources for public
access, provides meeting space for organizations or individual counseling,
and has full time reference staff on duty to assist patrons. MCBDP
provides counselors and technical expertise to program participants
and patrons of the MidCoast Business Resource Center. Southern New
Hampshire University has established a core business reference collection
at CML. Curtis is also a member of the Maine Census Data Center. The
MBRC is partially supported by a grant from the New Century Community
Program (grant partners include CML, MCBDP, and Coastal Enterprises
Inc.)
- Southern
New Hampshire University
For over ten years, Southern New Hampshire University and Curtis Memorial
Library have developed a strong partnership to provide a full compliment
of library services to SNHU students from the Brunswick Center and Brunswick
Naval Air Station. This partnership helped provide the foundation of
the Curtis business collection and continues to help the library expand
research opportunities for all patrons.
-
St. John's School
For decades the library and St. John's have shared a special bond. The
library serves as the official library for the school for all grades.
All students receive library cards and eight classes (K-5) are regular
visitors. The Young Adult librarian visits grade 6-8 classes regularly.
Many children attend the library after school for research and homework.
The families of the school made a substantial contribution to the library
building project and beginning in 2001 began a library book fund for
the benefit of all Brunswick families.
- Pejepscot
Historical Society
The Pejepscot Historical Society is the library's sister organization.
Both institutions were founded in the 1880s by Brunswick residents with
concern for the quality of life and educational opportunities for all
citizens. Over the years the library and Society have cooperated on
collections development, research activity, and programs.
-
Five River Arts Alliance
Five River Arts Alliance and the library collaborate presenting Arts Nights at the Library
during four evenings in the winter. These monthly events bring artists
together as they present their work to each other and the public. Each
event concentrates on a particular area of the arts - visual, performing,
literary, and fine crafts.
- Outreach
