Substitute Librarian Job Description

Position:   Substitute Librarian
Department:   Adult and Youth Services
Level:   L9
Status:   per diem
Pay rate:   $18.62/hr
Supervised by:   Adult and Youth Service Managers

 

Nature of Work

Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons at the Adult and Youth Services desks.  Other responsibilities as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities

 

LEADERSHIP

  • Assumes overall management of designated public areas while staffing the desk:
  • Maintains order and atmosphere conducive to positive library experiences for patrons
  • Acts as library manager some evenings and weekends
  • May assume responsibility for staff and building in absence of the Director
  • Demonstrates common standards of performance:

Maintains a positive attitude towards work
Interacts courteously and diplomatically with the public and with      co-workers
Attends work when scheduled and is punctual
Applies library policies and procedures; regularly checks for updates
Communicates regularly with other staff to facilitate efficient work and provide pertinent updates
Protects library users’ right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information      sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired, or transmitted

  • May attend all-staff meetings
  • Keeps abreast of current trends in librarianship

 

INFORMATION SERVICES

  • Assists patrons in locating materials and resources:
  • Answers and follows up on basic and complex reference questions
  • Provides readers’ advisory
  • Instructs patrons on the use of Minerva and other resources such as MARVEL database

 

COLLECTIONS

  • Places holds on requested materials and renews cards
  • Gathers materials for Minerva requests

 

PROGRAMMING AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • May implement programs and classes
  • May provide library orientation for visiting classes or other groups

 

PROMOTION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS AND SERVICE

  • Maintains displays promoting library materials and services

 

FACILITIES

  • May assist Meeting Room users with sign-up, opening and closing procedures
  • Opens and closes specified building areas
  • Ensures that public areas are neat and well-kept; notifies appropriate staff or custodians when attention is needed

 

SYSTEMS

  • Troubleshoots computers
  • Assists patrons in using computers and other equipment; creates temporary computer passes
  • Assists patrons in downloading audio books and e-books

 

Qualifications and Requirements of Work

  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of providing library services to adults and/or youth in public libraries; information sources and literature relevant to adult and/or youth patrons; and trends and issues in the field
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, including problem-solving and flexibility
  • Ability to work in a busy environment
  • Adaptability
  • Proficiency with automated library systems and other computer applications
  • Proficiency with online search tools and strategies
  • Graduate degree from an accredited library school
  • Physical:

Ability to perform tasks requiring some bending, lifting, pushing, and walking

Sufficient manual dexterity to use computers and perform other job-specific tasks

Ability to speak with clarity and to listen

Sufficient vision to perform job-specific tasks
