Beautiful and historical fans are currently on display in the library’s second floor display case courtesy of the Pejepscot Historical Society.
Before the 1500s, hand fans were used primarily in church and in royal court — but rarely elsewhere.
Since that time, fans like the ones in this exhibit exploded in popularity across Asia and Europe until their decline in the twentieth century.
This display showcases how people utilized fans for style, stories, and sales.
If you are interested in learning more about these fans or seeing what else the Pejepscot Historical Society has to offer, please visit their museum on Park Row.
